List of IPL teams Coaches

List of IPL teams Coaches

A lot has been written about the players and performances in the Indian Premier League. From bit hitters to technically gifted batsmen, the cash rich league has seen all since its inception. However, the coaches of the IPL franchises have played an equally important role in taking their teams forward. The owners of the contingents have appointed the best cricket coaches in order to achieve success in the slam bang event. With the ongoing edition at its peak, we take a look at the coaches of all the franchises.

Daniel Vettori - Royal Challengers Bangalore
The former New Zealand player has tons of experience when it comes to cricket. Apart from representing New Zealand for years, he has been part of the Indian Premier League since last few years. He has represented Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore before taking up the role of a coach at Bangalore based franchise. The left arm spinner has a clever mind and is spontaneous in his decision making ability. His presence will certainly help RCB in improving as a team in the eighth edition as well as in the near future. The Vijay Mallya-owned RCB should give him a long run in the coaching affairs.

Tom Moody - Sunrisers Hyderabad
The former Australian player was known for his all-round abilities in the shorter formats of the game. He played an important role during Team Australia’s World Cup triumph in 1999. Having retired from the game in 2001, Tom Moody decided to try his hands in the world of coaching. He led Sri Lanka to the World Cup finals in 2007.  His international experience and good coaching record earned him a coaching role at Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. The team has progressed under his guidance and he has played a key role in drafting the transfer policies of the IPL franchise. He believes in leading from behind the scenes.

Paddy Upton - Rajasthan Royals
He played first class cricket in South Africa before giving up his player cap in favor of physical fitness. He worked as a physical fitness trainer for South African team but switched to mental conditioning in 1999. The former cricketer was appointed Team India’s mental conditioning coach and assistant coach. He played an important role in taking the sub-continent team to number one rank in Test matches while his tips were vital during the World Cup win for the Men in Blue in 2011. He is with Rajasthan Royals since 2011 but was appointed head coach in 2013. He along with Rahul Dravid (Mentor) has made drastic improvement in the fortunes of this IPL franchise.

Trevor Bayliss - Kolkata Knight Riders
He is a former Australian player, who has got with him over a decade of top level coaching experience. The 52-year old was Sri Lanka’s national team’s coach from 2007 to 2011. Bayliss coached the Sydney Sixers team to a championship in the first season of the Big Bash League in 2011-12. He was appointed Kolkata Knight Riders head coach in 2012 and immediately led them to first IPL title. The success was once again repeated in 2014, when the Kolkata based franchise once again clinched the IPL trophy. He has been their go to man when it comes to coaching experience and the KKR team has reaped benefits out of his experience.

Ricky Ponting - Mumbai Indians
The highest run scorer in both Test and ODIs for Australia needs no introduction among the cricketing circles. He was one of the best skippers in the history of the game, who led Australia to two consecutive World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007. He joined Mumbai Indians in 2014 and was appointed their head coach in 2015. The ongoing season is his first tenure as a coach and he requires sometime to implement his policies on this IPL franchise. It will be wrong to judge him on the basis of just one season. His presence will improve the standard of the players as he is known to be a hard task master.

Sanjay Bangar - Kings XI Punjab
The former Indian all-rounder had a brief coaching stint with the India A team before he was appointed as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab in 2014. He was actively involved in the auction process and added players like Glenn Maxwell, Virender Sehwag, Mitchell Johnson and few others to the squad. It turned out to be a masterstroke as Kings XI Punjab finished as runners-up in the last edition. Sanjay Banger was hired as the assistant coach of the Indian team after the embarrassing Test series defeat to England in 2014. He is still with the Kings and has been impressive so far in his role. Many international players have praised him for his coaching acumen.

Gary Kirsten - Delhi Daredevils
He has been a successful cricketer in his career and has played quite a few match winning knocks for South Africa. His first stint as a coach turned out to be a mega hit as he led the Indian Team to the World Cup title in 2011. Apart from this, the former South African opener also helped India in clinching the number one rank in Test cricket. After leaving India, he had a successful coaching tenure with South Africa. However, he left the job because of his family commitments, as coaching an international team was keeping him away from his family. But the lure of the game couldn’t keep him away for long as he joined Delhi Daredevils as their head coach in 2014. The team performed poorly under his guidance but this shouldn’t take away his credentials in the coaching field.

Stephen Fleming - CSK
The former New Zealand captain played for Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League. He was appointed as head coach of the IPL franchise in 2009. Stephen Fleming has been a force to reckon with in the coaching department. The Yellow Brigade has won two IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles under his guidance. He is by far the most successful coach in the history of the cash rich league. The best part about his coaching is his calm and straightforward approach towards the game. The management has extended his contract upto 2016 as they don’t want to miss out on his services.
